4:30 pm EST, 1:30 pm PST

Are the antibiotics fed to healthy food animals to fatten them up causing antibiotic-resistance and making these important drugs ineffective in humans? Bait and Switch TV wants to find out.

Dr. Margaret Mellon, from The Union of Concerned Scientists, has written and spoken extensively on this subject. Her scientific findings are fascinating and frightening. Here’s your chance to ask her how she knows what she knows and what we should do about it.

Watch the recording of the Superbugs, Antibiotic Resistance and The Meat Industry live debate:

During our live interview and interactive debate with Dr. Mellon, we talked about her work on the "Keep Antibiotics Working" campaign. Doctors depend on antibiotics to treat illnesses caused by bacteria, from pneumonia to meningitis and other life-threatening infections. The effectiveness of many antibiotics is declining after decades of overuse and misuse in the meat and dairy supply. Dr. Mellon gave her expert testimony before the US House in 2009 on the Rules of the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act, and is an outspoken advocate of food safety. Together with Jane Rissler, she is the co-author of The Ecological Risks of Engineered Crops.

During these live debates, audience members have an opportunity to ask questions via live chat directly to the experts. You can ask Dr Mellon about antibiotic usage in the US meat, poultry, and dairy supply, the rise of antibiotic resistance, and implications for the human population.
